What We Owe to Each Other: Embodiment, Flourishing, and Public Bioethics
In this inaugural Charles E. Rice Chair lecture, O. Carter Snead, the Charles E. Rice Professor of Law, will explore how presuppositions about human identity and flourishing affect the governance of science, medicine, and biotechnology. He will make the case that the American law of public bioethics often fails to extend its full protections to the weakest and most vulnerable (such as children, the elderly, and the disabled) precisely because it operates from an incomplete and inadequate “anthropology” that fails to account for the inexorable reality of human embodiment. -

On Purpose is a program of immersive experiences that create space for students to engage in spiritual reflection and intellectual engagement that expands their moral imagination. Over Spring Break 2025, students will travel to learn and collaborate with partners who demonstrate profound commitments to human dignity in the face of serious challenges, demonstrating tangible love and care toward those on the social margins. Danielle Allen believes the path to health lies through re-building a supermajority of people—of all political ideologies—ready to work together to support constitutional democracy. In a time of increased polarization and weakening trust, it might seem impossible to create such a supermajority, but Allen will show us where and how we can build this supermajority, and why it is important. -

The Zahm Retreat is an annual gathering of Notre Dame faculty and administrators from multiple disciplines and diverse religious and ideological perspectives who are deeply committed to living out the mission of the University in the classroom and in their field of research. This year, during the fifth anniversary of the Zahm Retreat, participants will explore the question: How can Notre Dame’s mission be shaped by the global nature of the Church?
