    Catholic Social Doctrine: Taking Stock

    In this lecture, Professor Francis Russell Hittinger will examine how Catholic social teaching is not only an articulate defense of the dignity of the human person but perhaps more fundamentally an elucidation of the dignity of society. The remarks will draw upon Hittinger's recent book, On the Dignity of Society (The Catholic University of America Press).

    Ukrainian Studies Hub Inaugural Conference

    The Ukrainian Studies Hub will host its first conference on March 6–8, 2025. This conference will feature academic discussions, lectures, and presentations centered around Ukraine and Ukrainian studies.

    Spring On Purpose Retreat: Encountering Love and the Dignity of the Human Person

    On Purpose is a program of immersive experiences that create space for students to engage in spiritual reflection and intellectual engagement that expands their moral imagination. Over Spring Break 2025, students will travel to learn and collaborate with partners who demonstrate profound commitments to human dignity in the face of serious challenges, demonstrating tangible love and care toward those on the social margins. These organizations are living examples of how best to wrestle with the question, "What do we owe each other?"

    The 2025 Catholic Social Tradition conference will remember the 60th anniversary of two significant Vatican II texts, Gaudium et spes (Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World) and Dignitatis humanae (Declaration on Religious Freedom). Released on the final day of Vatican II, these texts together invited serious consideration of the role of the church and other religious communities in relation to the state.

    Featuring Danielle Allen, James Bryant Conant University Professor, Harvard University; Director, Allen Lab for Democracy Renovation, Harvard Kennedy School Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation Lecture : Bringing Democracy Back from the Brink: A Strategic Vision and a Call to Action How do we repair our fractured democracy? Danielle Allen believes the path to health lies through re-building a supermajority of people—of all political ideologies—ready to work together to support constitutional democracy. In a time of increased polarization and weakening trust, it might seem impossible to create such a supermajority, but Allen will show us where and how we can build this supermajority, and why it is important.

    Symposium: What Do We Owe our Veterans?

    Notre Dame Law School and the Military and Veteran Law Society will host a Symposium: What Do We Owe Our Veterans? on Friday, March 28 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The keynote address will be by Admiral Christopher Grady, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Other speakers will include Denis McDonough, former Secretary of Veterans Affairs; Angela Lowe, veterans disability attorney with Jan Dils, Attorney at Law; and Brian Nicholson, Department of Defense Cyber Program Director.
